As Steam gets flooded with a huge number of games, it becomes harder and harder to find the great Non-AAA Indie Gems between all the asset flips and low quality rpgmaker games.

Now it's your turn to share your favorite games, so that the rest from the community also gains the opportunity to enjoy those gems. I am (and I bet you all are) looking forward to your excellent suggestions.

I will begin with one of my favorite Indie titles in the first comment. It is not really unknown, but I assume many won't have heard of it yet.

Pathologic is a game I don't want to put into just one genre, as it won't do it justice.
Rock Paper Shotgun has a great Series about the game, discussing many points
which make this game exceptional. I would recommend that you enjoy this gem blind and
ideally don't read anything about it upfront, but I understand that you may want
to know something before you start. So I recommend to read part 1 of RPS series
(not more, it will spoil too much), as I won't be able to give a better description why this game is great,
and after that start playing.

There is a remake coming this year, but the developers already said, it won't be the same
as the original, so it is fine to start playing the original right now and look
forward to continue with the remake afterwards.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City

Is a kickstarter and greenlight success. These people only asked $8k for the game and they got $50k. It's a stylized metroidvania-like sidescroller that has a very promising lore and a really great gameplay. I have like 44 hours in it and i've finished it a couple of times. It has 4 playable characters in it. Really great game.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Is a final fantasy style turn based game. I played it on newgrounds some time ago. Both 3 and 4 has this world area exploration, secret stuff to find and lots of bosses. It's surprisingly a really good game and it's really fun, i did not expect to like it this much considering i'm not too much of a fan of this final fantasy style turn based combat.

Witch's House (download page)

Is not a game that is on steam unfortunately. It's an RPG maker game that is probably has one of the most fucked up endings i have ever seen in a video game, it's amazing and i absolutely loved it. It's one of the very rare cases of an rpgmaker game made right. Same thing goes to IB, another great RPG maker game.

I'm not a big fan of anime in general, it's just a coincidence actually that all these games that are not that popular and i liked really much, happens to be anime styled.

Karma. Incarnation 1

http://karma.game/

'Moral choice psychedelic adventure game with ingenious humor and mind bending puzzles.

Karma game unfolds a story of love between two beautiful souls. For a young soul the only way to get back the beloved one, abducted by evil spirits, is to be born as a dragon and defeat Evil. Yet something has gone wrong, and the soul is born as a worm named Pip. Our hero must overcome all difficulties of a surreal world, solve bizarre puzzles and save his love. Choosing between good and evil Pip learns laws of Karma in action, and this choice defines the further plot of the game.'

Mark of the Ninja,Transistor and XorceD - Sashiro's Laedrum are great indie games which deserves better acknowledgement and appreciation

The Deadly Tower of Monsters

You are playing a game about a movie in a movie. For the DVD release of the movie Dan Smith the fictitious director was asked for a director's commentary and his commentary is one part of the game that lets  you have a good laugh more than once. If you love Flash Gordon and fifties scifi movies like Forbidden Planet I'm convinced you'll thoroughly enjoy this game.

Super Columbine Massacre RPG delves into the morning of April 20th, 1999 and asks players to relive that day through the eyes of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, those responsible for the deadliest school shooting in American history.

"I said this game is one of the most important in gaming history, which I meant for two reasons. First, [the creator] has used a video game (successfully, I might add) to explore an important socio-cultural event. This is, hopefully, the first step towards the acceptance of video games as a legitimate medium for the expression of serious thought. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it is one of the only psychological explorations of the Columbine killers ever completed, and its sincerity is evident in the care displayed in the design of the game. It reminds us that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the murderers of Columbine, were victims of Columbine, as well." - Ryan Moore, The Pale Writer

I can't argue with the explanation of the game, but for myself, I feel like it would be too uncomfortable to play. And that discomfort is presumably part of the reason behind the game, but it just doesn't fit my motivations for gameplay.

Just downloaded and fired it up. It needs some work to get it running properly in Win10_64. You have to apply the font patch and set WinXp_SP3 in compatibility settings I also added 'Resolution=3840x2160' in the game .ini  - cheers.

35 mm

I'll always have fond memories of this game. This thread alone was worth the money for me.

As the developer added achievements to his game he honored elikos1 with the achievement 'Dangerous - Kill all dogs without reloading  weapons'. You'll clearly experience technical limitations like invisible walls but you have to keep in mind that it was basically made by one guy. I saw the game already four times in a bundle so you can pick it up for small money if you're interested.
