So you've recently lost some ARP? (6/6/17)

  • 140

So you recently lost some ARP?  Maybe even a ton of ARP.  Here's what MIGHT have happened.

We temporarily removed the This or That section yesterday.  At first, we just removed the board so no one could access it.  Of course, we didnt think hard enough and realized we had some conflicting actions that happened once the board was removed but the threads were still live.  So the only way to prevent that (at the time, in a speedy fashion) was to actually DELETE all the the This or That's.  We can, and will, bring them all back later, but for now, deleting them was the only way to make sure users didnt see a lot of errors on the site.

This of course, had a large effect on everyone who upvoted each thread.  When a thread is deleted, everyone who upvoted that thread loses a point.  The design of this is that if a thread is removed, it never should have been upvoted, so we try to slap the hands of those who did.  Of course, this is obviously not always the case, and in situations like this (that are rare), where we remove close to 75 threads, and popular ones that the majority of people upvote, the cascade is that everyone will end up losing points.

Do not fret.  Those threads will be returning (eventually, timetable not set), and when they do, all your points will return.  In the meantime, point people who have a major complaint of ARP loss to here.

Of course, you could have just been spamming and your threads removed.  That happens a lot too.

Thank you for explanation. Now all picture is clear. :)

Welp, that explains the recent loss of ARP. Now when This and That returns again, will it be new ones or the old? And maybe fix the never ending voting in it.

I would like to suggest that changes to the website are made in a better fashion.  The This or That forum was removed in such a way that it just returned a Page not found error when clicking the link from the homepage, rather than returning a message that it was temporarily taken down.  Also, having a test site where you could experiment with the changes first before making changes to the production site would reduce downtime and unexpected issues like the points getting removed.

Thanks for Explanation. I hope This and That will come back soon with some new polls.

We do have a test site.  This unfortunately was a matter of server health and had to be remove expediently.  We don't like removing stuff from production in this fashion, but we had no choice.  That was my bad that the homepage rotator still had the banner up.  That has been resolved.

It would be nice to introduce something like "Offers" where the users could offer high-quality (in the opinion and with the approval of the administration) voting.
And thus fill the section with new content.
It's also a good idea to remove the looping of the vote, make it final, but with a future complete change in your own votes so that users can not promote one candidate constantly voting only for him.
Only one vote or erase your own choices and vote differently.
