Unity Tutorial Ripped Off and Posted To The Steam Store

  • 1933

I saw this as a 'free giveaway' from freesteamkeys.com or more accurately https://www.freesteamkeys.com/free-dungeons-of-the-dead-steam-level-3-required/ which led to here https://giveaway.su/giveaway/view/851 . It then led to the Steam Store page to a game posted today, April 12, 2018, where I saw something disgusting in the game development world and fully Copyright Infringement: http://store.steampowered.com/app/828230/Dungeons_of_the_dead/ .

Here's the thing, I have seen this before. Where have I seen it before? Never at the Steam Store, but instead on the Unity Website and Unity Youtube Channel. It is from the 2D Roguelike Tutorial posted there on February 8, 2015.

Here is the Unity Page link: https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/s/2d-roguelike-tutorial

and the Unity Youtube Page Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdcnt2-Jf4w

This should have never happened. Since I am not the copyright holder, I just sent in a report. Please do this as well, since this does not belong to that developer and they outright stole it. Unity should be contacted as well. This is a huge deal in the game industry and bad practice. Makes you wonder about that company's other games and if they are really their own or if they ripped them off too.

April 18 Update: Got in touch with Unity; they are working on getting it removed! Yay!

Nothing new, @Knighwolf...

The practice is known as "asset flipping"
http://crappy-games.wikia.com/wiki/Asset_Flipping

And there's thousands of such titles at the steam store...
Most are done in hopes of generating enough sales for them to start dropping trading cards.

These guys maintain a record of a bunch of crappy devs who do tis for a living, if this interests you, you're gonna have a good reading time ;D

In fact

The issue here is that is appears to be complete copy and paste of the Unity game onto the store.

Asset Flipping or reusing the same assets, just different game or continuation of game series or even asset re-purposing for games is common, but to do everything is just wrong. A fine example of reusing the same assets would have to be Zonitron Productions' games that either have the same code or the same assets in each continuation, except different configuration. For arcade, first person shooters, and horror games, premade assets make sense if first time or just trying to make something quick.

Now, this deal here, if you play both the Steam page video and the youtube video I just posted, everything is the same as in exactly the same. That has got to be fully stolen then, not just reused.

Cynical Bastard

Wow just wow. Steam is getting more and more retarded.

Thanks for the post and raising an awareness for this. Really shameful people steep so low. This approach will hurt them more in the longer run. Why can't they see it?
