The Fallout Series Gets its Official Trailer
The newest trailer for the Fallout series aired on Amazon Prime’s Youtube channel on March 7th, and the 4-minute video gave us a better idea of what we had to look forward to on April 12th, when the series airs on Amazon Prime. We got to see a better look at each of the characters and got a clearer indication that Lucy, played by Ella Purnell, would be our main character. There’s also a better look at Walton Goggins playing The Goul as well as Aaron Moten whose character Maximus has joined the Brotherhood of Steel. We also get to see a snippet of Matt Berry voicing an organ-stealing robot, and its perfection. In addition to Purnell, Goggins, and Moten, we have Kyle MacLachlan as “Overseer Hank” and Lucy’s father, Moises Arias playing Lucy’s brother Norm, as well as Mike Doyle, Johnny Pemberton, Cherien Dabis, Dale Dickey, and Matty Cardarople.
Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner have been hard at work creating a story that takes place within the Fallout world but is not a retelling of any story we are already familiar with. This was a smart move, as it entirely avoids the criticism that the adaptation was not true to the story and gives the audience a chance to be entertained by something new, even if they might be familiar with the setting. It’s difficult to please die-hard fans, but much easier to delight when there are no expectations of plot. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Todd Howard explains that everything fits within Fallout lore. “We view what’s happening in the show as canon,” says Howard. “That’s what’s great when someone else looks at your work and then translates it in some fashion.” He admits to being envious of some of the TV show’s interpretations and additions: “I sort of looked at it like, ‘Ah, why didn’t we do that?’” It’s also reported that the writers had to shy away from adding certain elements to the plot, as they were something Todd Howard had planned for Fallout 5 -Todd wasn’t letting them use all the good ideas!
In the opening scene of the trailer, we see a very dapper (and normal human-looking) Walton Goggins introducing us to the “Veritable Camelot of the Nuclear age” which is the Vault. The mood quickly changes as we see images of the present-day real world in all its nuclear fallout glory. We see a young Lucy, born and raised inside the safety of the vault, venturing forth upon the newfound dangers of the world. We can see that the suits are from Vault 33, which is part of Los Angeles. Since the series takes place after the games in 2296. Boneyard (as LA is called in the game) would have been “civilized” under the New Californian Republic’s flag for a while. Judging the reaction of the old woman in the trailer, they don’t often see “Vault Dwellers” above ground, as they’re presumed dead. Through her endeavors, Lucy looks like she's having a hard time adjusting to life in the real world. There’s a gun pointed at her head from a rough (and 200-year-old?) Walton Goggins, an organ-harvesting robot, and warnings to go home. However, by the end of the trailer, it looks like she finds a few people (and dogs, Hi Dogmeat!) to help her survive above ground. Overall, it’s a successful trailer that shows the audience we are going to see Lucy go through a lot on her journey throughout the series as well as hints at how the world and the vault go there in the first place.
