Risk of Rain 2 original design was not in 3D. Here's what the Lead Designer's original concept looked like

Risk of Rain 2 just launched in Early Access a few days ago. Many were pretty skeptical about Risk of Rain 2 going from 2d to 3d. Many were gladly proven wrong that this change of perspective came only with the positive perks and it has been great all around. It already has quite a lot of content in this state, and even more is planned in the 1 year span, all with a very reasonable price of 17,99€.

But, what if i told you that the developers themselves had bigger aspirations for the game? The original design was not in 3D during development. It was actually in 4D.

What does it mean for a game to be played in a 4D perspective?

It is a very tricky thing to develop something in 4D, as no game ever done that before. Lead Designer Duncan Drummond said:

We originally planned for a 4D perspective, but our resources were a bit limited at the time. Unfortunately the concept had to be scrapped in order to focus on a more understandable medium of concept to further polish our product.

Duncan Drummond originally contacted the alien world of Al'Carner XIII for further concept in the 4th dimension. Here's an interview with clan ⏚⟒⋏ ⌰⟟⋏☌⟒⍀⌇⍜⎎⏁⋔⊬⌿⟒⋏⟟⌇ of the Al'Carner XIII royal clan:

Fortunately due to our advanced technology of 2019, we have translated the alien language, and it translates to something like this:

We bel☌ ☊⍜⌿ieve that humans are doing a go☌ od thing regarding their adv⍀⟟⌰⊬ ancements of the 4th dimensional plane of existence. Unfort⌰⌰nately our  ⏁ ⏃⋏ technology is not compatible with Duncan⍜⎎ ⏃ ⋔⏃ Drummond aspirations. We were glad to finally help ⏁⟟⍜⋏. human race on something, even if it was just  vi⏁⟟deo game.

The 4th dimensional had a very complex mathematical equation, translating the 4th dimension into:

Where the starting development parameter was s = \sqrt{\frac{1}{N-1} \sum_{i=1}^N (x_i - \overline{x})^2} coding right angle pH \approx pK_a  - \log \frac{{\left[ {HA} \right]_0 }}{{\left[ {A^ -  } \right]_0 }} where pOH = pK_b  + \log \frac{{\left[ {HB^ +  } \right]}}{{\left[ B \right]}} coding right parameter n3u(n)⇔\fracz(z2+4z+1)(z-1)4,|z|>1n3anu(n)⇔\fracaz(z2+4az+a2)(z-a)4,|z|>|a|

This process obviously was put to a halt by the Risk of Rain 2 developers amid complications with the game's engine not supporting the 4th dimension. This eventually lead them in a 3D perspective, which was ultimately the better choice, as the game currently sits at a 97% overwhelmingly positive score on Steam based on 5,000 reviews.

Well tough luck kiddo! Must suck to be dethroned and all, but hey you know what they say: "Competition breeds excellence"
