Battlefield 5 Microtransactions Have Come

Today onwards, players will be able to spend real-world cash to obtain Battlefield Currency, virtual money that can be used to purchase an array of items in Battlefield 5. Players that wish to pickup some Battlefield Currency can do so through the game’s main menu or first-party stores.

At the beginning, only cosmetic items will be purchasable. Specifically, players will be able to obtain new Epic cosmetics, along with some already available Battlefield 5 cosmetic items starting tomorrow. EA has further emphasized its intention to continue introducing cosmetic items that can be acquired with Battlefield Currency.

While Battlefield Currency will have a limited use upon launch, it will have further applications in the future — the next step is to make Elite sets available for purchase. Elite sets are an upcoming Battlefield 5 feature that will allow fans to “play as a distinct soldier in multiplayer modes.” Elites will feature their own cosmetics, voice overs, and animations as well as exclusive Special Assignments that will unlock special melee weapons.

Then, later in the spring, players will be able to use Battlefield Currency to buy “time savers.” The first of these time savers are Tier Catch-Ups that unlock Chapter Reward items for those that “don’t have time to earn all those items through gameplay.” The other time saver is one that provides boosted XP, which will allow Battlefield 5 players to gain weapons, vehicles, class ranks, and more at an accelerated rate.

At this point, the introduction of microtransactions in Battlefield 5 is unlikely to come as a surprise to most players. However, DICE has previously stated that Battlefield 5 would not be pay to win, and fan response to these new microtransactions will certainly be contingent upon the developer’s ability to adhere to that statement.
